IN 1978 ,

the No. 1 song in the US was Andy Gibb’s “Shadow Dancing.”

The Master Plan is a 10-year roadmap of concepts and ideas that will keep us relevant and attractive to those 55 and older. To put that in perspective: In 10 years, the Millennials will be old enough to live here. That’s not to say Sun City West is going to change course just for the Millennials! Quite the contrary! One of the inherent values of the master plan is that it not only takes into consideration the trends we’re seeing with the next generation, but it relies heavily on input from current residents. During their planning process, Berry Dunn captured your ideas, your needs and your wishes. They had more input from the community than they have ever seen – so kudos to the thousands of you who participated in the various opportunities to have your voices heard! The resulting master plan is your plan. It captures your interests. It ensures we plan for the future. And it respects the investment you’ve made here by prioritizing the community’s long-term health.

Meanwhile, John Travolta was topping the movie charts in “Grease.” Closer to home, one could get a new home in Arizona for an average price of $50,000 to $55,000. Ahh, the good ol’ days. It’s fun to take a look back, but what does all that have to do with Sun City West? Our community is about to adopt a master plan, one that outlines where we are and where we need to be given the monumental growth in active adult communities (our competition) and the generational changes that have occurred since Sun City West was first built nearly 50 years ago. Just like we wouldn’t expect Andy Gibb’s singing style to resonate with newer generations, we shouldn’t expect everything that made Sun City West popular in 1978 to be trending today. Consider the changes in working styles, interests, and even internet usage over the last 50 years.

Master Plan is a blue print for current and future residents A Word from the Board President

In 1978, when the Del Webb Development Company broke ground on Sun City West, John Meeker’s vision was clear; to build the gold standard in retirement communities. Meeker’s “gold standard” master plan and vision led to the creation of what today remains one of the premier retirement communities in the nation. Just like the role a master plan played in creating Sun City West, later this month the Governing Board and the community will see the results of an in-depth master planning process completed over the past year. A community inspired master plan will help ensure the success of Sun City West well beyond our 50th anniversary. The master plan is truly a community effort and the involvement of the community was exceptional. You were engaged in countless roundtable sessions, focus groups, surveys and online whiteboards. In fact, the consultants who helped guide the master plan process often complimented the high degree of engagement of our residents. Your input, literally hundreds of ideas and recommendations, culminated in the master plan recommendations we will see in two sessions later this month. The master plan will be presented at the Governing Board workshop at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the Lecture Hall. Later the same day, the plan will be presented a second time in a community wide presentation at 1 p.m. in the RH Johnson Social Hall. At the Governing Board Regular Meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Lecture Hall, the Governing Board will then vote to accept the completed master plan document. The master plan, based on your feedback and input throughout the process, will give the Governing Board and the community

recommendations on projects and actions to recommendations onprojects and actions to consider as part of our overall strategic plan. The master plan will be a long-term, forward look at the things you told us are important to preserve and the areas to improve so we maintain the Sun City West experience for our current and future residents. Acceptance of the master plan does not commit the Board or the community to implementing any of the recommendations contained within it. Once the plan is accepted by the Board, the Board will, over time, consider each of the recommendations for inclusion in the strategic plans that are updated each year. Any recommendations considered will go through the same capital projects review, budgeting and approval process as is followed today. continued on page 10 HOURS PRESIDENT’S MONDAY, OCT. 5 9 TO 11 A.M. Help make Christmas magical for local children Sun City West’s Primetime, Softball, Woodshop and Women’s clubs are joining forces with Stardust Theatre and RCSCW for this season’s Toys for Kids event.

Be part of this holiday season’s special event through the means listed below!

DONATIONS Make a child’s eyes light up with a donation of new, unwrapped toys suited for children ages 5 to 7. Great donation ideas include dolls, action figures, cars and fun playsets. Donations can be brought to Stardust Theatre. Call 623-544-6563 to schedule a drop off time. DON’T HAVE TIME TO SHOP? WE CAN HELP! Cash or check donations are also greatly appreciated. Our designated Santa Shoppers will use monetary donations to purchase age-appropriate toys for the children. VOLUNTEER Volunteers are needed on the morning of Dec. 14 to help walk with the children while they visit Santa and his workshop, sing some carols, select a gift and have cookies and juice before they head back to class. Whether you can give a little time of your time or spend the entire morning with us, it would be great to have you be part of this experience. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply our time and attention. If you’re a member of a chartered club that might want to participate by making gifts for the kids or becoming part of the volunteer team, reach out to 623-544-6563 for volunteering details.

A Walk Through History John Meeker: The Man Who Saved the Sun Cities

Sun City proved such a success when it first opened in 1960 – spawning active adult communities throughout the nation – that history often overlooks how the community nearly collapsed five years later. Nearly 1,200 homes were sold that first year, but by 1965, sales had fallen to less than 400 units, prompting the Del E. Webb Development Company to consider abandoning Sun City altogether. A “Plan B” was even developed and the company briefly considered turning the property north of Grand into a multi- generational community with schools and an industrial park. But a young man convinced Del Webb there was another way – a better way to attract retirees to the desert. That man was John Meeker and less than a year after being named president of DEVCO, he had sales moving in the right direction. Meeker’s formula for success was simple: Keep residents happy and strive to make Sun City the premiere active-adult community in the world. Meeker met with residents routinely to hear their complaints and desires. He expanded the number of clubs and organizations available to residents, upgraded and modernized model homes, and made it his mission to build quality amenities. One of the first amenities built under Meeker’s watch was the Sun Bowl, the outdoor amphitheater that still stands today. The facility not only provided top-notch entertainment for residents, but it was an excellent marketing tool that promoted Sun City nationwide.

The Del E. Webb Development Company held its official groundbreaking ceremony for Sun City West on Feb. 15, 1978. From left to right, are DEVCO President John Meeker; Arizona Sen. Dennis DeConcini; J.G. Boswell Company Vice President Hank Raymond; DEVCO Vice President R.H. Johnson and Arizona Governor Wesley Bolin. DEVCO was also the builder of Sun City, the nation’s first active-adult retirement community. Sun City expanded north of Grand Avenue in the late 1960s, and Meeker got his chance to build a new community from the ground up when he created Sun City West in 1978. The success of the Sun Bowl in Sun City prompted Meeker to build something similar – but bigger, better and indoors – in Sun City West. In 1980, the Sundome Center for Performing Arts would open in Sun City West and at the time was the largest, single-level amphitheater in the Southwest. The story of John Meeker and his role in developing both Sun City and Sun City West is told in the newest presentation created by the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum’s Speakers Bureau. The new 30-minute talk, “John Meeker: The Man Who Saved the Sun Cities” is presented by Alan Schlemmer, current vice president of the museum’s Board of Trustees. Clubs and organizations are invited to contact the museum to schedule this and other available programs. Visit the museum’s website to see a complete list of talks and arrange for a presentation. 23 OCTOBER 2026 REC CENTER NEWS │

Featured Club A Growing Community Agriculture Club prepares for the season

Nestled between a manufacturing yard and Grandview Golf Course’s 14th green sits a seven-and-a-half acre hidden gem few Sun City West residents seem to know about. “We’re Sun City West’s best kept secret,” said Agriculture Club president Rich Woosley. “But we don’t want to be kept a secret any more.” Behind its gates at the end of 17800 137th Drive sits roughly 250 plots managed by the 330-member Agriculture Club. Members may purchase up to two 20-by-40 foot plots per household which they are then responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. For those who are new to the club or unsure whether they have that green thumb or not club plots are available for a season or two. Cost to work in the club plots is the annual $10 club dues and the refundable cost of $200 to cover clean up and cage repair. If that member finds they have the knack then they may purchase one of the available plots. Currently, there are nine available plots, according to Woosley.

Agriculture Club vice president Carole Kittelmann waters her garden last season. Thanks to her crops Carole said she has not needed to purchase produce at a grocery store in more than a year. Tomatoes are a popular commodity among the club’s community, but with a wide range of states represented among the membership, Woosley said you can expect a variety of crops being grown, including Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes and spinach. Many of the members had never farmed or gardened before coming to Sun City West, Woosley said, but once they learned about the club and purchased a plot they found how much they enjoyed the activity. “You get out of your plot what you put in. Some of us with plots are here nearly everyday while others only stop by once a week. It all depends on how much time you want to put in,” Woosley said. “It’s wonderful to just be outside with your garden. It’s peaceful here. Some of us come out and just sit around enjoying the outdoors. Sometimes I’ll just come, sit back and read a book out here.” For more information about the Agriculture Club, visit agriculture.scwclubs.com.

Japanese cabbage sprouts begin to pop up in Bill Conaway’s plot just three days after being planted.
